The Chinese American Dance Ensemble (CADE) is a folk dance group of approximately 90 students based in Edison, New Jersey. Students from the ages of 5 to 17 meet every week for lessons to study traditional steps and movements of Chinese folk and court dances under the tutelage of Chin-Wen Chao, the CADE's choreographer and artistic director.

The CADE performs regularly in cultural festivals and events around New Jersey in places such as the Garden State Arts Center, Rutgers University, Union County College, the Newark Museum, and high schools around the state. Originally comprising only students from Union Chinese School in Westfield, the ensemble gradually expanded to include students from Murray Hill Chinese School, Edison Chinese School, Raritan Valley Chinese School, Tzu Chi Chinese School, Hua Xia Chinese School, Mid-Jersey Chinese School, and others.

In 1998, the dance group was assimilated into the CACA, or Chinese American Cultural Association, and thus took the name Chinese American Dance Ensemble. Today the CADE still remains under its parent organization, the CACA, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our mission here at the CADE is as follows:

  1. To promote education of Chinese folk dance, thereby preserving it;
  2. To help children of Chinese descent understand their heritage through Chinese folk dance;
  3. To achieve community harmony by participating in cross-cultural events and thus spreading cultural awareness through dance and art.
